Lloyd's Register has introduced Fire (C, Risk), a new risk-based notation aimed at improving fire safety assessments aboard container ships, reports Saint Petersburg's PortNews.
The notation is supported by guidance to help shipowners, designers and operators choose suitable fire mitigation measures based on a vessel's specific risk profile.
Fire (C, Risk) was included in the July 2025 update to LR's Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships and marks the first use of LR's ShipRight Risk Based Certification methodology for container ship fire safety.
The framework enables tailored safety enhancements to be identified and validated from the design stage through to operational deployment.
LR said the notation supports its wider goals around innovation, technology adoption, digitalisation and data-driven design verification.
