Autonomous trucking is poised to reshape logistics and strengthen the US economy, says former Texas governor Rick Perry in an opinion piece for Fox News.
Mr Perry argued that artificial intelligence is transforming trucking, just as ATMs once revolutionised banking. He said autonomy is not about replacing drivers but solving real problems like labour shortages, rising costs and global competition.
The American Trucking Associations reports a shortfall of 80,000 drivers, expected to double by 2030. Logistics costs rose from 7.5 per cent of GDP in 2020 to 8.7 per cent in 2023, adding pressure on families and businesses.
He warned that China is advancing rapidly, with autonomous freight systems operating on 85 per cent of its highways. He said the US. risks losing strategic ground unless it embraces innovation.
By 2035, 13 per cent of US trucks are expected to be autonomous, representing a US$178 billion market. Globally, the sector could reach $616 billion, with China projected at $327 billion and Europe $112 billion.
Safety and productivity gains are substantial. Human error causes 90 per cent of truck accidents, and full autonomy could save US$36 billion annually. Autonomous trucks can operate nearly nonstop, speeding up delivery and reducing shortages.
Perry cited Texas as a model, where clear regulations have enabled driverless freight between Dallas and Houston. One fleet logged over 20,000 autonomous miles since May. Arizona and New Mexico are following suit, while California lags due to regulatory hurdles.
Perry urged Washington to adopt Texas-style policies to ensure the future of freight remains "Made in the USA". He said autonomous trucking offers faster, safer and more affordable transport, and a competitive edge in the global economy.
