The Port of Brisbane handled a record 1.62 million TEU in FY2025, marking a 7.8 per cent rise in total trade to 34.9 million tonnes, reports Rotterdam's World Cargo News.
The port had previously processed 1.61 million TEU in FY2024 and 1.56 million TEU in FY2023. Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd CEO Neil Stephens said the port's performance reflected its role in powering Queensland's economy and supporting community connectivity.
Full import container volumes reached 693,000 TEU, while full container exports totalled 395,000 TEU. Stephens said container imports remained strong, driven by Southeast Queensland's population growth and demand for building materials and household goods.
Bulk grain exports surged 259 per cent year-on-year to nearly 2 million tonnes, with chickpeas accounting for almost one million tonnes. The spike followed India's temporary suspension of chickpea tariffs in 2024.
Refrigerated meat exports rose 12.9 per cent to a record 77,750 TEU, with over half shipped to North Asian markets.
The port benefited from new investment by global and local logistics firms, with seven property developments completed across 26 hectares in FY2025. The expansion is said to be a vote of confidence in the port's efficiency and its role in regional economic growth.
