Chinese solar, battery and electric vehicle firms have committed over US$210 billion to foreign manufacturing projects since 2022, aiming to expand supply chains and access new markets, reports Bloomberg.

A report by Johns Hopkins University's Net Zero Industrial Policy Lab found that more than 80 per cent of the 460 overseas green manufacturing projects tracked since 2011 were announced after 2022. Brown University researchers contributed to the study.

The investments are designed to bypass tariffs, secure raw materials and strengthen China's global position in clean energy. The country's push has lowered costs worldwide but raised concerns among rivals over dependence and labour conditions.

China's expansion comes as US President Donald Trump rolls back green policies and Europe faces regulatory delays. Analysts say China is now exporting not only green products but also its manufacturing capacity and value chains.

Xiaokang Xue, a researcher at the Net Zero Industrial Policy Lab, described the shift as structural and rapid, with Chinese firms building factories abroad to internationalise their green tech operations.
