The Boeing 747 freighter, long a cornerstone of global air cargo, is being phased out in favour of more fuel-efficient twin-engine aircraft, reports Mumbai's STAT Trade Times.
Known as the "Queen of the Skies", the 747-400F and 747-8F offered unmatched payload and nose-loading capabilities. Despite its legacy, rising fuel costs, emissions rules and maintenance complexity have made the four-engine jet less viable.
The 747-8F, the final jumbo freighter, features improved engines and avionics but remains less efficient than newer models. Only 155 units were built, with the freighter version slightly more popular than the passenger variant.
Some operators still use the 747-8F for heavy-load missions or where infrastructure compatibility is critical. However, the industry is shifting toward aircraft with lower emissions and better fuel economy.
Boeing's 777F, based on the 777-200LR, is emerging as the preferred replacement. It offers twin-engine efficiency, extended range and strong payload, with carriers like Emirates and Silk Way West expanding their fleets.
Emirates is also evaluating the Airbus A350F and Boeing 777X freighters. Silk Way West plans to replace its 747s with 777-8Fs and A350Fs by 2030.
Boeing is advancing passenger-to-freighter conversions, including the 777-200LR. Mammoth Freighters is converting ex-Delta aircraft, offering cost-effective options for markets with limited new-build availability.
