China's exports to the US fell 33 per cent in August, marking the fifth straight month of double-digit declines, while overall export growth slowed to its weakest pace in six months, reports Bloomberg.
Total overseas sales rose 4.4 per cent year-on-year to US$322 billion, missing Bloomberg's median forecast and trailing July's 7.2 per cent gain, according to the General Administration of Customs.
Despite the US slump, strong demand from other markets has kept China on track for a record trade surplus of more than US$1.2 trillion this year.
Michelle Lam, Greater China economist at Societe Generale SA, said the tariff shock from the US is being offset by market diversification and manufacturing strength. She expects a gradual slowdown as US demand weakens.
The August figures reflect ongoing shifts in global trade flows following President Donald Trump's 55 per cent tariffs on Chinese goods, which sharply reduced direct US demand.
China's trade surplus reached just over US$785 billion in the first eight months of 2025, nearly one-third higher than the same period last year.
