Bangladesh's Mongla Port processed 6,769 TEU in July and August, reflecting rising trade activity and improved port infrastructure, reported Dakha's New Age Media Home.
The Mongla Port Authority said the port handled 21,456 TEU in the 2024-25 financial year, with the first two months showing strong growth due to increased imports and exports.
Makruzzaman Munshi, deputy director (public relations), said container throughput had surged compared to the previous year, with expectations that volumes could double.
Chief planning officer Zahirul Haque noted that Mongla's favourable business climate and lower transport costs compared to Chattogram Port were attracting both domestic and foreign traders.
To support rising demand, the port is undergoing expansion and modernisation, including new jetties and dredging of the Pashur Channel.
Member (finance) Abed Ali said Mongla Port was boosting national revenue through Mongla Customs House and contributing to economic growth via long-term planning and efficient management.
He added that lower import costs and strong industrial demand were driving increased shipments of bulk cargo and consumer goods.
Sayed Zahid Hossain, president of the Mongla port Berth and Ship Operator Association, said container volumes had risen due to robust domestic and global economic conditions and a stable supply chain.
