Maersk has added the 17,480-TEU Bangkok Maersk to the Danish International Ship Register, marking the third methanol-ready vessel in its Hermes series and the latest dual-fuel addition to its fleet, reports Saint Petersburg's PortNews.
Denmark's maritime regulator confirmed on September 9 that Bangkok Maersk is ready for methanol operation and welcomed the vessel under the Danish flag. The ship was delivered in late August by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Ulsan, and is currently sailing its first commercial legs in East Asia.
Bangkok Maersk is part of Maersk's new class of same size dual-fuel ships, following Berlin Maersk and Beijing Maersk. The class, an evolution of the Ane-class, features a wider beam and is Maersk's largest dual-fuel design to date.
Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding, said the Berlin Maersk class supports multiple fuel pathways. Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology, noted the design builds on earlier vessels like Laura Maersk and Ane Maersk, setting new efficiency standards.
Bangkok Maersk measures 351 metres in length, 56 metres in beam, and has a deadweight of about 198,229. It is classed under ABS and sails under the Danish flag.
Sister ships Berlin Maersk and Beijing Maersk are already operating on East-West routes. Bangkok Maersk is expected to join Asia-Europe services as the class is phased in.
Maersk operates in over 130 countries and aims to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Its fleet renewal strategy focuses on dual-fuel vessels using methanol and LNG to maintain flexibility as green fuels scale up.
