Container throughput at Port Houston surged 21 per cent year-on-year in July to 392,829 TEU, marking the fastest pace in the port's history for 2025, reported London's Port Technology.
Year-to-date container volumes reached 2,562,506 TEU, up six per cent. Loaded imports rose 19 per cent in July, the highest among the top five US container ports. Loaded exports, mainly resins, increased 18 per cent compared to July 2024. Total loaded containers handled so far this year are up five per cent.
General cargo volumes climbed 10 per cent year-to-date through July. Steel imports jumped 41 per cent in July and are up eight per cent for the year, totalling 2,704,658 short tons. Overall tonnage across public facilities rose 6 per cent to 32,647,865 short tons.
Infrastructure upgrades continue, including Wharf 7 at Bayport Container Terminal. The 1,000-foot berth is due for completion in December, nearly two months ahead of schedule. It will boost vessel capacity and cut anchor wait times.
The Houston Ship Channel Expansion, Project 11, won the Environmental Excellence Award from the Western Dredging Association. Nearly all of the 15 million cubic yards of dredged material from Galveston Bay has been repurposed for ecological restoration. The dredging allows vessels of up to 17,000 TEU to call at Bayport Terminal. Port-led dredging is expected to conclude this summer, with further work by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Port Houston, a political subdivision of the State of Texas, operates eight public terminals along the Houston Ship Channel. It manages two major container terminals and the region's largest breakbulk facility. The Channel complex, with over 200 private and eight public terminals, is the largest US port by waterborne tonnage.
