Six individuals have been charged in Greece over what prosecutors say is the European Union's biggest-ever seizure of fraudulently imported goods from China, reported Agence France-Presse.

The European public prosecutor's office in Athens said the June raid at the port of Piraeus uncovered more than 2,400 shipping containers, mostly packed with e-bikes, textiles and footwear.

The goods were valued at a minimum of EUR250 million (US$294 million), according to the agency.

Two customs officers face charges of repeated false certification, facilitating unlawful gains and causing damage exceeding EUR871,000. They are also accused of aiding customs fraud.

Four customs brokers have been charged with repeated customs fraud and false certification.

Prosecutors suspect the brokers declared identical container volumes for importation each month over several years.

The alleged scheme ran for at least eight years, resulting in estimated losses of EUR350 million in customs duties and EUR450 million in VAT sales tax.
