Air cargo is a critical but often overlooked component in global oncology treatment access, with logistics networks ensuring temperature-sensitive therapies reach patients safely and on time, reports London's Air Cargo Week.

Yulia Celetaria of Healthc'Air said each shipment of breast cancer therapy represents a life-saving treatment, requiring precision and timing across the supply chain. The humanitarian dimension of air cargo merges operational discipline with empathy.

Alex Guillen of Tive highlighted the last mile as the most vulnerable stage, especially for therapies requiring 2-8C or cryogenic conditions. Tive's real-time trackers and monitoring services help prevent temperature deviations and ensure product integrity.

Logistics provider Biocair uses Tive's dry-ice probes to track shipments and intervene early. Mr Guillen said each successful intervention directly improves patient outcomes.

Aytekin Saray of Global GSA Group said oncology shipments involve multiple actors, and GSAs play a key role in coordinating routing, capacity and contingency plans to avoid disruptions.

Dirk Goovaerts of Swissport said pharmaceuticals form the backbone of operations at its 23 certified pharma centres. Facilities feature multiple temperature zones and continuous monitoring, with staff trained to handle life-saving cargo.

Swissport's Cool+Connect corridor in Basel reduces truck movements and CO2 emissions while improving temperature stability. Future investments in Liege and Chicago will support ultra-low-temperature handling for gene therapies.

Lufthansa Cargo treats life sciences and pharma as a strategic pillar, operating over 230 pharma stations. A breast cancer treatment route from Dublin to Tokyo uses Envirotainer units and active temperature control.

The carrier's LCCevo project will transform Frankfurt into a smart pharma hub by 2030. Lufthansa also connects remote regions via Brussels Airlines and promotes sustainability through fleet upgrades and Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Urte Wirtz of Lufthansa Cargo said flexibility and transparency are essential for reliable pharma logistics. By 2030, air cargo will remain indispensable for delivering advanced cancer therapies worldwide.
