Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has launched a stand-alone service connecting the US with West and South Africa, strengthening its position in north-south trades following Maersk's exit from their joint route, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.

MSC's move allows it to become the sole direct operator between the US East Coast and South Africa, while adding West Africa to the rotation in both directions. This dual-route strategy boosts critical mass and mitigates short-term trade volatility.

Container Trade Statistics show modest growth in both trades over the past five years, but MSC's exclusive service is expected to capture high market share and command premium rates.

By including West Africa, MSC gains intra-Africa capability, using underutilised space on vessels returning from South Africa to tap into strong regional demand.

MSC's control of key hubs - Freeport, San Pedro and Lome - and its feeder network enables efficient access to multiple local markets, enhancing service flexibility and cost control.

Spot rates suggest MSC will secure a premium, especially on US-South Africa lanes. The deployment reflects not only MSC's fleet strength but also its strategic planning and hub integration.

While future developments remain uncertain, MSC's swift action and resource leverage signal a competitive edge that rivals will struggle to match.
