The Port of Gothenburg is on track to reach an all-time high in container throughput, with volumes rising four per cent in the first three quarters of 2025, reported New York's Maritime Logistics Professional.

A total of 709,000 TEU were handled during the period, driven mainly by increased imports. Export volumes remained stable, while the share of empty containers continued to decline, reflecting balanced trade flows.

Rail freight volumes rose four per cent to 393,000 TEU, with over 60 per cent of container cargo now moved by train. Growth was supported by shuttle services to northern Sweden, hinterland areas and the Stockholm region.

Ro-ro traffic also rebounded, with 394,000 units handled, up one per cent year-on-year. Imports led the recovery, while exports held steady.

Car volumes fell nine per cent to 172,000 units. Exports to Europe dropped 13 per cent, and exports to the United States declined 21 per cent due to US tariffs on EU vehicles. Imports saw a slight increase.

Energy cargo fell seven per cent to 15.2 million tonnes, though September saw a 22 per cent rebound, partially offsetting earlier declines.

Passenger traffic remained stable at 1.1 million ferry travellers. The cruise segment expanded with 55 calls and 75,000 passengers, and monthly cruise visits are scheduled through year-end.
