South Korea's HMM has become the eighth carrier to surpass one million TEU in operated capacity, reports Singapore's Splash 247.

According to Alphaliner, HMM's fleet now totals 1,007,180 TEU, doubling its capacity over the past five years. The 2020s have been the most profitable decade in container shipping history, the report noted.

HMM's expansion is set to continue with five new vessels in the 8,500 to 9,000-TEU range due next year, followed by twelve 13,000 TEU ships later in the decade.

In September 2024, the company announced a KRW23.5 trillion (US$17.48 billion) investment plan to nearly double its container fleet and triple its tanker and dry bulk fleets by 2030.

HMM ranks eighth in Alphaliner's global carrier list. Taiwan's Evergreen is poised to exceed two million TEU, a milestone recently reached by Japan's Ocean Network Express. Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) is expected to cross the seven million TEU mark soon.
