Danaos Corp has expanded its newbuilding programme with an order for two 5,300-TEU vessels at CSSC's Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard, reports London's Riviera Maritime Media.
Shipbroking sources said the deal includes options for further units. Danaos has worked closely with CSSC in recent years on multiple shipbuilding projects.
The move marks a return to mid-size tonnage, following last November's order of six 1,800-TEU feeders. Until then, the US-listed company had focused mainly on ships in the 6,000-9,200 TEU range.
Danaos said vessels in this segment remain vital for emerging markets in Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America. Such ships are valued by major charterers for secondary routes and by smaller operators for core capacity.
According to its Q3 earnings release, Danaos controls an orderbook of 23 vessels totalling 153,350 TEU, most already fixed on long-term charters. Deliveries will run from this year through 2029.
All newbuildings will feature eco-efficiency designs and comply with the latest International Maritime Organisation requirements. Danaos also operates 75 container ships amounting to 477,491 TEU and 11 Capesize bulk carriers.
Contracted cash operating revenues stood at US$4.1 billion as of November, including newbuildings. The container fleet has an average charter duration of 4.3 years.
Greek owners have entered 2026 with strong ordering appetite. Costamare is reportedly in talks with CSSC for a potential series of 9,200-TEU vessels.
