DP World and Punta Cana Free Trade Zone have started a new international air cargo service to Europe, strengthening the Dominican Republic's role as a logistics gateway, reported LA's Globe Newswire.
Operating twice weekly via the Punta Cana Air Cargo Hub, the service will move transit cargo from South America, Central America and the Caribbean to Europe. Initial capacity is set at 120 tons per month.
The service targets high-value and time-sensitive goods including perishables, pharmaceuticals, parcels and dry cargo. Shipments from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru will be consolidated in Punta Cana and connected to flights to Madrid, Frankfurt and London.
The partners are also considering expansion into Canada as demand grows. The hub features 43,000 square feet of cold storage, streamlined transit processes, direct ramp access and enhanced security.
By the end of 2025, the terminal handled 33,000 tons of cargo, a 15 per cent increase on 2024. DP World Dominican Republic CEO Manuel Martinez said the expansion offers exporters faster and more reliable access to international markets.
The project builds on a 2023 alliance between DP World and Punta Cana Free Trade Zone to develop the hub as a world-class logistics platform. General Manager Ebell De Castro said it consolidates Punta Cana as a strategic hub for innovation and air logistics.
UniWorld Air Cargo CEO Romen Gonzalez said the launch represents a strategic vision positioning Punta Cana as a gateway to Europe, creating opportunities for trade and regional development.
