The International Chamber of Shipping has released a new Deck Procedures Guide, completing a trilogy of core shipboard safety manuals alongside its Bridge and Engine Room guides, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

The publication provides the industry's first comprehensive resource dedicated to deck operations, covering cargo handling, mooring, anchoring, bunkering, heavy weather preparations and equipment maintenance. It also includes guidance on compliance with the IMSBC and IMDG codes, interactive risk assessment tools and adaptable checklists.

One chapter addresses alternative fuel bunkering, including LNG, methanol and ammonia, developed with leading operators and reviewed by the Society for Gas as Marine Fuel. ICS said the guide helps crews operate confidently while maintaining high safety standards.

The guide was developed through a review process involving Swire Shipping, Anglo-Eastern Univan Group, Japanese Shipowners Association, MISC Group, Intercargo and CLIA. It is intended for masters, chief officers, deck officers, bosuns and engineering officers, with ICS recommending that a copy be carried on board every ship.

It also serves superintendents, HSEQ managers, shoreside safety teams, training institutions and terminal operators. ICS said the guide complements its other manuals, harmonising best practice across ship operations and improving coordination between departments.

The Deck Procedures Guide offers an international alternative to regional guidance, aiming to reduce deficiencies and enhance port state control confidence. ICS emphasised that the guide promotes best practice approaches rather than regulatory mandates, providing practical guidance for today's global fleet.
