Global air freight markets saw a sharp post-holiday recovery in early January, reports South Africa's Freightnews.
The Cargo Movement Update compiled by the South African Association of Freight Forwarders and Business Unity SA said worldwide chargeable weight rose 26 per cent week-on-week, reversing the usual year-end contraction. However, tonnages remain about 20 per cent below mid-December peaks.
Average global rates eased to around $2.46 per kilogram, down 10 per cent from mid-December but slightly above last year's levels. Yields remain under pressure despite the volume recovery.
WorldACD data showed air cargo rose five per cent week-on-week for the first full week ending 11 January, followed by a 25 per cent increase in chargeable weight the following week.
US-based AIT Worldwide Logistics said the surge was anticipated in December, when demand rose 6 per cent year-on-year. Asia-Pacific to Europe volumes were particularly strong, up 15 per cent.
AIT forecast moderate growth of 2-3 per cent across the sector in 2026, in line with projections by consultancy Xeneta. The International Air Transport Association's December 2025 outlook projected 2.4 per cent volume growth to 71.6 million tonnes, with stable yields despite moderating e-commerce after last year's 4-6 per cent surge.
