Los Angeles tops 10m boxes for 3rd time

The Port of Los Angeles handled 10.2 million TEU in 2025, marking the third time it surpassed 10 million units, reports American Shipper.
The figure was near record levels despite trade challenges, slightly below the 10.3 million TEU processed in 2024. Executive Director Gene Seroka told 900 guests at the State of the Port event that cargo remains vital to the US economy, crediting workers for the achievement.
December imports fell 7.9 per cent to 424,498 TEU, while exports slipped 2.18 per cent to 108,074 TEU. Empty containers dropped more than 26 per cent to 259,014 TEU, reflecting weaker demand for China goods amid tariffs and policy changes.
Mr Seroka outlined expansion plans under the "Build Bigger and Build Smarter" strategy, including the proposed Pier 500 Marine Container Terminal, which he said would be the port's first new terminal in a generation and the cleanest in the world.
Other projects include a Maritime Support Facility for chassis parking, expansion at Fenix Marine Services, and wharf and rail upgrades at LA TiL Container Terminal. The port is also enhancing its Port Optimizer traffic management system with an US$8 million state grant to extend truck appointment systems to Long Beach.
Los Angeles reported the lowest emissions per TEU of any port worldwide and will use a $412 million Environmental Protection Agency grant, alongside $230 million in non-federal funds, to expand zero-emission infrastructure. Additional highlights included record cruise passenger numbers, Olympic sailing events in 2028, and recognition of responders to a container ship fire.
