Brazil's TRG port productivity surges after US$44m equipment investment

SHIPPERS, terminal owners Wilson Sons, and ocean carriers are benefiting from vastly improved productivity as a result of the BRL146 million investment (US$44 million) in new equipment, including three ship-to-shore gantry cranes, at the year's start at the Tecon Rio Grande (TRG) box facility in Rio Grande do Sul, a southern state in Brazil, where up to almost 157 moves per hour have been recorded, the highest in nation.
Despite increased competition this year from terminal operators in the neighboring state of Santa Catarina, TRG - which serves the 4.5 million population of the Porto Alegre metro area - will end the year with about 770,000 TEU handled, according to provisional figures, up 6 per cent from 2016. Equally impressive is that the 11-month total is 702,500 TEU, up 6.5 per cent compared with 660,600 TEU handled for the same period in 2016, IHS Media reported.
Further, the productivity gains have been generated despite TRG losing, in August, its Asia joint service - which includes Hamburg Sud, Hapag Lloyd, Zim Integrated Shipping Services, Hyundai Merchant Marine, and NYK Line and operates between the east coast of South America (ECSA) and the Far East - to its nearest rival, Imbituba, in the state of Santa Catarina to the north.
Imbituba, owned by Santos Brasil, the biggest operator of boxes in South America, has been underutilised in recent years and has offered very low rates to attract new business. Imbituba handled 30,000 TEU during 2016 - far below its full-year capacity of 500,000 TEU. The underutilisation is even more stark given that Imbitua has sufficient draft (roughly 13.5 meters at low tide) to handle the larger vessels now calling along the ECSA.
With a draft of 12.8 meters at low tide, TRG breached the nation's record by achieving 157 moves per hour, its third productivity record of the year, after working on the 5,532 TEU capacity Hamburg Sud container vessel, the Monte Aconcagua, which operates on the ECSA to US East Coast trade line.
In addition, TRG set three consecutive monthly movement records in July, August, and September with an average of 74,000 TEU moved per month.
"All these positive numbers are a consequence of the commitment of our staff and our investments in training, equipment, and technology. We thus guarantee greater operational efficiency, meeting the main demands of our shipowner clients. After all, a faster terminal helps reduce the costs of the operation," said TRG terminal director Paulo Bertinetti.
All main carriers call at TRG and have services to the US Gulf Coast, US East Coast, Northern Europe, and the Mediterranean, in addition to ECSA Mercosur and cabotage services, as well as a Hapag Lloyd, Hamburg Sud vessel sharing agreement to South America's west coast via Asia.
