Swissport has expanded its Central and Eastern European cargo network with a new warehouse at Sofia Airport in Bulgaria, reported Singapore's Payload Asia.

The 2,200 sqm facility, located 80 metres from the apron, offers 2,000 sqm of storage capacity and is designed to support rising air freight volumes. The proximity enables faster aircraft turnaround and reduced dwell times.

Swissport said the warehouse can handle general cargo, pharmaceuticals, perishables, e-commerce and special shipments such as live animals and valuables. Temperature-controlled areas ensure cold chain integrity and compliance with pharmaceutical standards.

The facility incorporates Swissport's digital cargo management platform, offering real-time shipment tracking, automated documentation and integrated customs clearance. Security features include X-ray screening, CCTV monitoring, a secure vault and a fenced yard for road feeder services.

Operating under ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications, the warehouse strengthens Sofia's role as a regional cargo gateway. Swissport now runs 122 warehouses in 31 countries, handling more than 5.2 million tonnes of cargo annually.
