HMM Advances Ambitious Fleet Diversification Strategy

South Korea's flagship carrier HMM is pressing ahead with an ambitious fleet diversification programme, committing USD 6.32 billion in investments across the tanker, gas carrier, and offshore markets to strengthen its resilience against cyclical market fluctuations.

Under HMM's updated 2026 Mid- to Long-Term Strategy, the company is pursuing a multi-pronged expansion that extends well beyond its core container shipping operations. In addition to scaling its containership capacity to 1.47 million TEU across 166 vessels by 2030 - a target designed to reinforce its hub-and-spoke liner network - HMM plans to grow its bulk carrier fleet to 13.52 million deadweight tonnes across 110 vessels by the same year. The strategy further targets the energy, automotive, and offshore sectors as key pillars of stable growth and sustained profitability.

HMM Executive Vice President and Head of Bulk Division James Kim underscored the disciplined approach guiding the company's expansion: "Acquisition or merger is more convenient and faster, but if you acquire at a price higher than a reasonable level, it will become a burden. HMM management, including myself and the CEO, are cautious about this."

In the tanker and gas carrier segments, HMM currently operates a fleet of 14 very large crude carriers and holds newbuilding orders for a further six, while also running LNG vessels under long-term charter arrangements. The company has re-entered the automotive transport market through PCTC orders, and has directed a portion of its investment programme toward the offshore sector, with a particular focus on offshore wind installation vessels.

Taken together, these initiatives reflect not merely a broadening of HMM's asset base, but a deliberate repositioning of the company as a diversified, full-spectrum maritime operator - one built to navigate the volatilities of global trade while advancing steadily toward long-term strategic leadership.
