World's First "Lashing-Free" Container Vessel Officially Delivered

HD Hyundai reports that the technology increases the permissible deck cargo weight by more than 10 percent compared with conventionally designed vessels of equivalent type. Beyond raw capacity gains, the reduction in manual lashing operations translates directly into fewer procedural steps during container loading and discharge - a development with meaningful implications for port turnaround efficiency. For both seafarers and terminal workers, the reduction in manual lashing and unlashing activity around container stacks is expected to lower the risk profile of those operations.

HD Hyundai further asserts that the new structural system provides stable support for containers in adverse sea conditions - high winds and heavy swells - thereby reducing the risk of cargo shift and, critically, container loss overboard.

It is worth noting that CMA CGM GOLD employs a hybrid variant of the Lashing-Free technology, representing a partial rather than comprehensive application. Not every deck container position on the vessel has had lashing equipment fully eliminated. "Lashing-Free," in this context, more precisely describes a substantial reduction in manual lashing dependency through new structural and securing technologies, rather than the complete removal of all conventional securing devices across the entire vessel.

The technology itself is not without precedent within HD Hyundai's development portfolio. The company had previously pursued extensive research and development on Lashing-Free container vessel design, securing formal design approval in 2022. In 2024, the technology was presented at the International Maritime Organization's Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers as part of South Korea's technical submissions. Sea trials for a vessel incorporating the system were completed in September of this year. HD Hyundai has noted that, when compared with designs employing conventional hatch covers and lashing bridges, the new structural configuration produces measurably reduced vibration during voyage. The company is currently developing a next-generation iteration of the Lashing-Free system with enhanced weathertight capability.

CMA CGM GOLD was formally named in a ceremony on October 2 before departing on October 6 for its inaugural port call at Tianjin, China.

For the container shipping industry, the significance of Lashing-Free technology extends well beyond the elimination of a single manual task. As large container vessels face intensifying demands around cargo efficiency, port operation throughput, and crew safety, reducing manual deck operations and increasing vessel carrying capacity have become consistent priorities in ship design. HD Hyundai has stated its intention to extend the application of this technology to small and medium-sized container vessels in future programs - positioning Lashing-Free not as an isolated innovation, but as a structural advance that stands to redefine how containers are secured and handled across a broad segment of the global fleet.
