China Eastern Airlines Returns to Stockholm with Renewed WFS Cargo Handling Partnership

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a SATS company, has renewed its cargo handling contract with China Eastern Airlines at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, marking the airline's return to Sweden after a six-year absence and reuniting two partners whose relationship dates back to 2018.

The three-year agreement follows China Eastern's resumption of non-stop passenger and cargo services between Shanghai and Stockholm, restoring a direct link between Scandinavia and eastern China that was suspended during the pandemic. WFS served as the airline's handling partner in Sweden before COVID-19 disrupted the route.

China Eastern now operates three round-trip flights each week connecting Shanghai Pudong International Airport with Stockholm on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The airline expects to carry more than 1,000 tonnes of cargo annually between the two cities.

For freight forwarders building schedules around dependable long-haul capacity, the restored connection offers a fixed, recurring lane into a major Asian gateway - a predictable option for consolidating shipments and meeting delivery commitments across the Scandinavia-Asia corridor.

The Shanghai-Stockholm route holds strategic weight for both trade and tourism between the regions, opening additional airport-to-airport capacity for shippers managing goods across long distances.

WFS operates two cargo terminals at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, covering a combined footprint of more than 18,000 square metres. The facilities include newly commissioned pharmaceutical handling areas certified to Good Distribution Practice (GDP) standards, alongside integrated road transport services.

The GDP certification matters for temperature-sensitive and high-value consignments, giving forwarders and cargo owners a documented cold-chain option at the point of handling - a safeguard against product loss and a compliance benchmark for regulated freight such as pharmaceuticals.

WFS now provides cargo handling and trucking services for more than 20 international airlines and freight forwarding clients at the airport, positioning the terminal as a multi-carrier hub for inbound and outbound flows.

"We are delighted to welcome back China Eastern as a valuable customer of WFS at Stockholm Arlanda," said Kim Elfstrom, Managing Director Sweden at WFS. "We enjoyed a strong working relationship in Sweden before the pandemic and have maintained our close Scandinavian ties with the airline through our ongoing contract in Copenhagen."

Elfstrom added: "We look forward to supporting China Eastern's return to Sweden and its future growth on this important route."

The China Eastern renewal is the latest in a sequence of commercial wins for WFS at Stockholm Arlanda. Over the past 12 months, the company has renewed its cargo contract with Singapore Airlines and secured a new handling agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways.

Taken together, these agreements strengthen the airport's standing as a diversified freight gateway and give forwarders and cargo owners a broader base of carrier connections handled under a single, consistent operator.

The return of the Shanghai-Stockholm route is more than a reinstated timetable. It restores a direct trade artery between Scandinavia and Asia, backed by certified infrastructure and an established handling partnership - a foundation for reliable, long-term freight movement between the two markets.
