NYK and Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co are collaborating with Horiba Ltd to develop a sulphur-in-oil analyser for ships, to enable engineers to perform onboard analyses to determine the actual sulphur content percentage rather than estimate as done previously.

With the analyser, based on an existing device used at onshore analysis centres, NYK will be able to comply with regulations limiting sulphur oxides (SOx) from vessels as well as optimise the company's use of low sulphur fuel oil, reported American Shipper.

The NYK group pointed out that certain areas around Europe and North America have been designated as emission control areas (ECAs) to prevent air pollution, and ships sailing though those areas are required to use onboard fuel oil having a maximum sulphur content of 0.1 per cent.

Onboard engineers must change to low sulphur fuel before entering ECAs by calculating the time that the sulphur concentration in tanks and pipes will decrease to 0.1 per cent or less, underscoring the benefits of utilisng a sulphur-in-oil analyser.
