    Wan Hai Lines orders 20 new container vessels

    TAIWANESE box carrier, Wan Hai Lines, has signed an agreement to acquire 20 container vessels from Japan and China.

    The shipping carrier early this week inked the deal at its headquarter in Taipei for eight 3,036-TEU boxships with Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) and twelve 2,038-TEU container vessels with Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard Co Ltd (GWS) /China Shipbuilding Trading Company, Ltd (CSTC).

    Delivery of the 3,036-TEU vessels will begin at the end of October 2020 and delivery of the 2,038-TEU vessels will begin in early January 2021.

    Wan Hai has the option to order an additional four 3,036-TEU vessels within six months and four 2,038-TEU vessels within three months.

    The company did not disclose the value of the contract, but according to a report in TradeWinds of Oslo, the deal is worth US$900 million.

    Wan Hai Lines currently operates a fleet of 72 owned vessels and 24 chartered vessels.

    In a statement, the carrier said the new order "is part of the company's fleet improvement plan to ensure that its vessel fleet is able to remain competitive and support continuous market development.

    "Eventually, the company hopes to deliver better service quality to its customers by more efficient vessel fleet."

    BlueWater Reporting shows the carrier's top five trades it currently allocates the most capacity toward are the Central Asia-to-Southeast Asia trade at 30,393 TEU a week; the Southeast Asia-to-Central Asia trade at 29,207 TEU a week; the North Asia-to-Central Asia trade at 16,252 TEU a week; the Central Asia-to-North Asia trade at 13,647 TEU a week; and the Asia-to-India Subcontinent trade and Indian Subcontinent-to-Asia trade, each at 8,893 TEU per week, reports Singapore's Splash 247.
